We had a lot of fun in the sun in Maui this last week. Lisa is already looking forward to 5 years from now when we can go again. Here are some pictures to show you what I mean.

We took the family to the Alyeska Hotel and got the girls ski and snowboard lessons. A great time was had by all.

So, I started back on Monday, getting 'training' and cheesy pep talks from district personnel. Kids started Thursday, Alyvia has the same teacher she did last year so the first day was smooth and easy. The 32 day raining streak happily ended the day kids went back to school, typical, so everyone was in good spirits. I'm happy to be finished with school so I can focus on teaching, parenting, and husbanding instead. Love all, see you late.

We finally made it home on Friday morning about 6 am. We were held up in Beautiful British Columbia because one of more than 30 BC wildfires was blocking the only road home. Canada experienced over 600 fires this summer! Wow, that's a lot! Anyways, we had a great time visiting friends and family, dining out in restaurants that don't double as hair salons, and burning in the heat of SLC and Chicago. The summer was full of love and fires, odd bed-mates I agree, but a nice analogy for the cyclical nature of life and relationships. At any rate, we had many incredible and unforgettable experiences with many wonderful people the last 3 months. We hope to see you in AK soon cause we won't be back for a while, unless there is a marriage or death in the family. Pics will follow.

I don't have much to say, the weather has been so beautiful lately. I resolved to get out since I'm all alone at home this week. I did some homework and decided to go to Hatcher's pass and do a hike. This is called Reed lake, it's an 8 mile hike into a beautiful mountain valley. I met some really cool guys who were just finishing a 3 day, 15 mile hike up over these mountains, and a wolverine. He and I basked in the sun on some rocks near a beaver damn overlooking the Matsu valley. Good day.

If you look closely in the upper left, you'll see my wolverine friend, he's probably 20yards away, fixing his den.

There are a bunch of boulders at the base of this valley, I climbed one an took a nap.

Whatever, it's spring.

Well, my body says it's springtime but the weather disagrees. Such is life I suppose. We've been having a grand ole time going crazy indoors. We force ourselves to get out, whenever the sun shows its face, even though it's only 40 degrees. Here are a few digital delights to catch you up to speed.
The moose are out and about, humping and eating everything in sight.

This one wanted to eat our barbecue!

Over my so-called "spring break", we put in new floors in the bedroom, and painted anything that wasn't nailed down.

We got a new puppy, officially named Chairman Mao, but we call him Moosie.

The girls and I made a birdhouse.

Alyvia's front tooth is literally hanging by a thread in her mouth.

Ainsley, who is growing up way too fast, mastered the patented Davis picture pose.

She is also nearly housebroke. Every time we put her in panties after making a doo doo in the toilet, she immediately pees on the floor. Between her and the puppy, Lisa is about to have an anurism over all of the "fecal bacteria in this house!"

It's spring and that means, dying, hiding and eating boiled eggs!

Recently, Moose clawed Milo's nose and it got infected, so he's on antibiotics and pain killers with a swollen nose. Moose is keenly taking advantage of his Achilles heel.

He really exudes bravery and resolve, with just a hint of serial killer for excitement.

Ahh it seems only yesterday I was at the Bull and Bear flirting with this beautiful girl wondering how I was going to see her again since neither one of us had a phone. Now, that girl is my wife and we have two lovely monsters, a loving home and a wonderful life together. I am so fortunate to have been in that bar, drunk and singing karaoke to Vanilla Ice on that fateful night, what are the odds, really? Slim to none, but somehow my inebriated charm worked and here we are in Alaska! Wow! She does so much for us everyday, we are so lucky to have her. Here are some pics of our amazing mother and wife. We just had a small, no-frills party for Ainsley at home. She is getting so big, definitely 2 going on 12. Mom made cupcakes and we went swimming at the gym. On her second birthday we witnessed a miracle when Ainsley made her first potty on the toitee, hooray! We bought her an Elmo potty, she used it that very night! How's that for motivation?

My baby is 2! Ainsley is such a fun little girl. She loves to follow around her big sister Alyvia and do whatever the big kids are doing. She loves helping Mom and does the dishes daily. She loves anything to do with Elmo, and "Abby Dabby". She watches Madagascar whenever she has the chance. She loves to go swimmin' at the "gym's". She loves her cousins and talks about them constantly. She is such a loving, spunky, fun little girl. We love you Ainsley!!!!

Moose 'n' Zucchini

We haven't seen our moose family all summer. This week we have seen a mommy and her two babies a few times. They came right up to my garden and ate my radish plant tops, they left my zucchini alone. I planted 6 zucchini plants and thank goodness there were only 3 that matured. I checked my zucchini regularly and received a few small squash but all of the sudden there were these huge green zucchini's. I made zucchini bread 2 times and have cooked a few, but lately I've been thinking about door bell ditching my neighbor's with zucchini's on the porch to greet them.

Alyvia is so excited to be going to school finally! We know she is ready. We asked Lyv what she was most excited for, she said, "recess". We asked what she was most nervous about and she said, "homework". I am surprised to find out that, yes, kindergartner's do have homework. She rides to school with Dad in the morning and is in charge of getting herself ready. So far she has only had to go to school once with her p.j.'s on! She came home the other day whining about wanting hot lunch. "Are you serious?" I asked her why she wanted hot lunch and she said if you have hot lunch you get pizza ever day, yeah right. We decided she could have hot lunch once a week. Why would you want hot lunch if you had a Mom like me making your cold lunch?

I am going to volunteer once a week in Lyvi's class. I also help with an after school club called the Virtue's club. I am lucky to have Adrienne close by to watch Ainsley.

I actually felt cool and confident about Lyvi going to school until Jefferson and I started reminiscing and looking at pictures of her growing up the night before school started, I couldn't stop bawling. I actually thought I was going to be sick the morning school started because I was so nervous for her. Ainsley and I miss her a lot but she's having lots of fun.

The Alaska State Fair

I love me some fair! The Alaska State Fair is great fun, we just sit on the benches and watch the people go by. We went with The Nelson's to the fair on a sunny Monday evening. It actually wasn't too crowded. I've been thinking about fair food since last year. I love the smell of fried food. The Alaska State fair has particularly great food. We started out with some coconut crab cakes, beer battered halibut, peanut fries (we think they are called that because of the shape), fried cheese curds, and a pork chop on a stick. I really wanted to try the cheesecake in a cone but I didn't have any room.
Alyvia loves to get her face painted, she calls it her fair face. She even permanently painted her dolls face in a "fair face" after last year's fair. This year she wanted a unicorn and that is what she got! Notice the man's face in the background.

Wow, it seems like only yesterday I was complaining about how there were no good women left, and then I met my Lisa in a smokey bar in Salt Lake. aahh memories.

Have you ever stood on a Glacier? It's kinda like if you were tiny and walked into your freezer.

We had our first out-of-state visitor last week. Grandpa Bill came to visit for 4 days. We were so happy to see Dad, and Grandpa. He was sooo cute with his Grandgirls. He played with Lyvi every waking hour. On our drives to and from our adventures Grandpa insisted on being squished in the back with the girls. We had a few Alaskan adventures, good food, and lots of it.

A note from Juneau

Juneau is beautiful! I really love it here, even with the rain (which at least for now isn't bad at all) it's absolutely fabulous. I am learning a lot of good stuff about being a leader, doing research (like all good masters students), studying theory, looking at case law and reading my ass off. I miss my girls sooo much though and can't wait to be finished so I can go home and relax before school starts up again. Here are some pics for you to enjoy.

The magnificent Mendenhal Glacier. This beauty lost 250ft. last year alone. It lost over a mile in length and nearly 2/3 of its mass in the last 20 years.

This is my bro Jeff Ambrosier, or Rambosia as we like to call him. He's from Dillingham, and in his spare time guides bear hunts.

In 1970 I would be at the base of the glacier if I was in this same spot and you wouldn't be able to see the mountains behind it because it would be nearly twice as tall.
Oh well, what do we need these glaciers for anyway? I'll need some real proof before I believe that global warming is a real problem that I have to worry about. For anyone that can't tell, I'm being extremely sarcastic. Love you all, see you soon.

This may well be the last post for a little while. I'll be in Juneau until July 18th for school. Stay cool this summer!

Lisa is excited but Milo is annoyed with his new doggy life-vest. Incidentally, Milo can swim he's just looking to make a fashion statement.

The traditional native Alaskan typically goes to the beach looking like they just jumped off the cover of a southern romance novel. "It's all about protection against the sun's sinister rays" commented an area local. The vicious life-sucking mosquitoes that frequent the area do seem to cause erratic, unexplainable behavior. P.S. it's 85 degrees, Bears are also afraid of large hats and leather boots so she'll be well protected against any grizzly that might attack. What's more, this lovely ensemble doubles as evening-wear to let loose at the pub with friends later on. 2 birds, 1 stone...ch-ching!

Oh my Milo is 1 or actually 7! Dogs really grow up fast. I remember the first day I saw him, he was the cutest dog I have ever seen. I never knew a dog could make me so happy. I've always wanted a dog but Jefferson has a real aversion to hair, human and animal. I never thought I would actually get a dog. He is part of our family and my little buddy. He is always so happy to greet me when I get home it makes my day. He loves his treats and dances on his hind legs for one. He is so patient with Ainsley, Ainsley love him so much and many times a little too much but he never whines or bites. We all love our Milo!

Well, let's see. Matt and I drove the infamous Alaska Highway, it was not as beautiful as it was last summer but we had a pretty good time. The Audi does great on snow and ice luckily. We didn't encounter any major storms, the coldest it got was -35 in Calgary and Edmonton. Erika and Mike and Co. stopped in for a few days and we all had a blast. Matt is up in Fairbanks now trying to find a job.
Lisa and I got a gym membership for the family and Lisa is very excited to be working out every morning at 6am. I'm just sore.

Cutting the midnight shag!

So, all was well here on a Thursday night. The girls were in bed, or so we imagined, and Lisa and I settled down to watch the tele before bed. For brevity, I'll skip the business in between going to bed and waking up the next morning. 8 a.m. rolls around and I go to retrieve our children from their beds. When I notice something strange stuck to my feet. It just so happens that what is sticking to my bare feet is a very large pile of human hair.
I look at my daughter Ainsley and notice that, compared to my memory of what her hair looked like 12 hours ago, she's bald! I turn to my daughter Alyvia and notice her bangs are, shall I say, deshevelled. As my eyes scan the room I spy a wadded up towel on the floor near her bed and pick it up. Long locks of blonde hair drizzle out and, with a thud, a pair of scissors hit the floor.
At this point I'm kinda speechless. I know what happened I just can't believe it! At first, Lisa and I thought it was sorta funny, Ainsley had a mullet and Alyvia just looks like she's been in a fight and had her hair pulled out. Then I start to think about Alyvia cutting sister's hair in the middle of the night, in the dark, with sharp scissors and then turning them on herself. I think of her trying to hide it all in the towel but giving up and falling to sleep before she could finish. At this point we both start to get angry. When my idea of shaving Ainsley's head for the sake of balance and Alyvia's head for punishment fails to garner any support amongst the family I decide to let Grandma take over. She does her best to make their hair at least even. What I know from many a childhood experience, that no one else knows, is that Grandma is notorious for turning even the most basic 'trim' into a Sinead O'Connor look alike contest. So, I kinda got my way without being the bad guy. The following pictures are the aftermath of this most heinous event. Enjoy!

Alyvia has since resigned to wear a hat and stay away from scissors. We told her that Traci had to go to school to be a hair stylist and that maybe she should just wait until she's older to experiment with her sister's hair. I got a haircut also just to commemorate the occasion but I opted to make an appointment with a licensed stylist rather than keep it in the family.

Ainsley Walks! An account of mixed feelings.

You always want your kids to do well in life but walking is really one of those 'baby steps' that end up being more of a problem than anything else. With walking comes freedom of movement (I know that sounds like a positive thing but anyone with kids will tell you it's not). With walking comes falling. With walking comes walking away. Kinda like talking brings NO! and WHY? Add that to the fact that it means your baby ain't a baby anymore and they will eventually grow old and hate you for raising them. At the end of the day what you've really got is the beginning of the end. Yes, it is a cynical view, but I've always thought of pessimism and reality as being synonomous. Anyways, the 'baby step' that truly is positive (without unforseen consequences) is using the toilet and not missing or forgetting that you learned. These last two caveats are the most important, so don't celebrate too soon or you'll feel stupid for throwing away all of your pull-ups in a frenzy of premature parental extolment. Soon I hope to be posting, Ainsley goes peepee in the toitee! Hooray!

We have had a busy week of birthdays and fun. Jefferson's birthday was the 9th and Alyvia turned 5 on the 10th. On Jefferson's birthday Mom (Jan) took the girls to Adrienne's to give us a night by ourselves. We went to eat for the first time at my work The Alpine Garden Grill. It was so good!!! I am glad the food was amazing, now I can be proud to work there. A few days later we went snowboarding. We wanted to go somewhere cheap so we drove to a ski area called hilltop. It was literally a hill, so we left. We then drove another hour to Alyeska. We should have just gone to that big, beautiful mountain first. I am pleasantly surprised at how light the snow is up here. We had so much fun and it snowed all day on us.
We had a party for Jefferson and Lyvi Monday night with Jefferson's family. We had soup night, opened presents and just had fun.
Lyvi has been so excited for her birthday. I wish we could have made her dreams come true and had all of the cousins here. She continually asked me when her Utah cousins would be flying up. We went to lunch with Grandma Jan to Subway. After we got home we played Barbie's for hours. We went to Bouncin' Bears (an indoor bounce house) and McDonald's. Yes it's true my daughter wanted McDonald's and I agreed to it. She had fun with her BF Colton and her cousin's Adelaide and Davis. I had a great time celebrating but had a tear in my eye all day thinking of how big my baby is.

Oh Hawaii, my favorite place to be. I had such a great time with my family last week in Maui! It was so awesome to meet my twin nephew and niece and to catch up with everyone. I got to do everything that was on my list: eat fish taco's at Hula Grill, sushi, coconut shave ice, smell a tuberose, visit my friend Dave, eat Macadamia nut pancakes at Gazebo, luau and laying out with Maui Babe until I can't stand another moment of sun. I feel so lucky to have had Jefferson and grandma Jan babysit the kids so that I could have Lisa time. Thank you Mom and Jefferson!! I don't remember the last time I had a week to myself. I think everyone should take a personal vacation, I feel so rested, at peace and genuinely happy! Thanks to my Briggs family for all the memories and fun times!!

With Lisa gone sunbathing in Maui, I've been able to catch up on some projects. It helps that the weather here has warmed nearly 70 degrees in the last week too, I actually felt like walking out the door. For the first time since Thanksgiving it's above zero, it's now 45, two weeks ago it was -30. But enough about the weather.

First, the bathroom used to be a neon, pea-green that usually invoked vomiting, so we changed it to a cool monochromatic blue so that we could all keep our food down.

I finally broke down and got a haircut after the secretary at my school made a poignant, yet decidedly necessary, comment about the wily girth of my hairdo.

After watching too much of the Green channel I felt compelled to build a compost bin, so I scraped together a bunch of wood I had lying around the house and built a 3x3x3 ramshackle old bin for free! Thanks DIY network!

As for the final bit of news this week, I have just been accepted into the (get ready it's a mouthful) Masters of Education and Leadership Program at the University of Alaska Southeast, in Juneau. The program involves 2 summers in Juneau for coursework and a year in my district for an internship. I will be done in August of 2010 and after that I'll start combing Alaska for Principal positions. I bet none of you ever thought that I would be a principal, go on admit it. That's OK, I find great pleasure in doing things that no one expects. Here are a couple pics of the campus in Juneau.

Friday morning on the way to work a moose ran across a busy 'highway', narrowly missing Grandma's head as it barreled into the tin-can-on-wheels she calls a car. Grandma maintains that the moose hit her, but we all know better. Here are a few shots of the aftermath. I wish I had a shot of the moose because the local officials told Grandma it was one of the biggest they'd seen in a while. The animal in question was shot on sight and Grandma was towed home. Luckily she's still alive, I kid you not, the head of this thing was inches away from where she was sitting.

Alaska is odd for many reasons, one of which is Halloween or lack there of. At Jefferson's school they don't dress up or have a parade because 40% of parents don't like this pagan holiday. Lame!! At least Jefferson doesn't have to find a last minute costume. Last night our neighbor's told us about a big Halloween celebration at the local sports complex. Why Wednesday night before Halloween? Why not on Halloween???? I'm not sure of reasons but I was happy to get to do some Halloween celebrating, since I will be working on Halloween. Which makes me wonder who goes out to eat somewhere nice on Halloween? I guess on Halloween it will be 10 degrees and kids drive from house to house in heated vehicles. I think Alaska should officially change Halloween to "dress up day with candy" and celebrate it the first week of school, in August!!!

Last week Ainsley, Lyvi and I went on a little adventure. We drove 6 hours through a winter wonderland to Erika's house in Fairbanks. The drive was so beautiful, the trees all looked like they were flocked, the mountains seemed to be covered with marshmallows and there were chunks of ice floating down the rivers. It's really interesting to drive and not see another vehicle for long amounts of time. We had such a great time at the Guymon's! They treated us so well. Erika's house is as cute as you can imagine!! Fairbanks is soooo cold, I actually felt warm back in Wasilla. The North Pole is so unique, you drive in to see lighted trees and huge candy canes lining the main street, even the fire hydrants are striped like candy canes. A few highlights were: good Chinese food at a local restaurant, Erika's cooking, hot springs, Santa's house, crafts, and just relaxing! It was fun for Lyv to play with her cousins and Ainsley to get full attention. I enjoyed laughing, cooking and reminiscing with Erika. Hopefully we can visit again soon, next time with Jefferson. I would like to give a shout out to my mother-in-law, Jan for letting me use her vehicle for a week and to Jefferson for watching Milo, being bored and eating crappy food all alone.

Sorry to take a light-hearted blog and turn it into a political rant but...I just have to say that I am disgusted with the government for even considering buying all the bad loans from these banks. They made horribly risky investments because they could, due to a supreme lack of regulation. Now we have to buy all their crappy loans and instead of beefing up regulations to prevent this in the future we are going to give them more tax breaks and do nothing about the CEO caps? I think that we'll be doing all of this again in 10 years. I think we need to do nothing and force these banks to rework their business practices or die trying. De facto, replacements will have to do better. I realize that now their mess is ours but I still want these banks to pay instead of me. I also think that whatever bill passes it needs to have some sort of punishment for the greedy bastards who facilitated this collapse. I can't even get a credit card now! Maybe we should stop relying on other people's money to run our country.

Alyvia's favorite part of the trip from Utah to Alaska was going on the ferry. Apparently there was a movie theatre and playground and she said it was amazing fun. We are finally going to close on our house and move in! It took us no less than 2.5 months from the time the bank accepted our offer until closing. 6 weeks of which were spent in a trailer and one week in a truck. Well as you can imagine that was all spectacular but I guess we have to live in a house now, what a bore. It was a lot more fun bitching about being homeless. The grass is always greener they say.

Summer is almost over! and other examples of pointing out the obvious

It's been a real treat living in a camper trailer in Adrienne's yard these last few weeks. I don't know what we did for fun before but it was more fun than this. As you can see even Lisa hasn't lost her sense of humor about the situation. Lisa and I made an offer on a lovely broken down old modular here in Alaska over 2 months ago thinking that we would be living in it by now. Alas, we are still joyfully displaced, hey, now I know how all of those folks in Africa must feel!
The weather here is sort of nice, I guess, if you like crappy weather. We have been able to catch up on all of the books and homework and napping we've been missing out on. Lisa has been trying to drop the baby weight by eating chocolates, drinking beers and walking up and down the driveway. It's really been a pleasure to watch the pounds just melt away! Eat your heart out Angelina!
Ainsley, who is so precious to us, screams like someone is choking her for comfort - or when she's hungry, thirsty, messy or tired. Oh, and our sweet Milo, when he shat on our bedding out of fear of being devoured by the howling wolves just outside the door I couldn't help but chuckle.
Alyvia is on her way here with Grandma Jan, they're on a ferry watching whales and glaciers calve. I'm sure it must be grand. We expect to see them as early as August 6th. Erika and the gang of thieves she calls her children will be following closely behind - arriving no later than the perfectly acceptable hour of midnight, August 7th.
Lisa and I will be celebrating our beloved 3rd wedding anniversary on August 8th. Wait, how could that be when our eldest daughter, Alyvia, is nearly 5 years old ... that must mean ... yes, it's true ... she's a bastard. I blame television for, well, everything. Anywho, it's just another swell day here in the AK, where the sun only shines while you're in the shower.

Our daughter Ainsley has got to be one of the happiest, smiliest babies in the world. Alyvia, our oldest, was a joy to be sure but was very serious and always looked like she was trying hard to figure something out. Ainsley, on the other hand is just happy to be alive. She has a huge smile and the biggest, bluest eyes you'll ever see. We thought we'd pay tribute to her sweetness with a blog. The Vigorous Debate on Oil

Well, obviously there are many ways to look at the 'oil problem'. Mostly, I choose to ignore it until I gas up, I bitch and moan about the price, I complain about all the profit the oil companies are making at my expense, then I fill up my tank. Honestly, what am I supposed to do, walk everywhere? Take a bus or train? I live in Alaska not New York. There are no trains or buses or metro stations - hell, you're lucky to find a taxi! I could write a letter to my congressman who wants to drill the oil here in Alaska and elsewhere because he's beholden to people who make money on the oil companies' profit. I could buy a Hybrid vehicle, I suppose, but that only saves me a little money, it doesn't really solve the 'oil problem'. Hello, drilling more oil doesn't get us off of oil, it just makes it temporarily cheaper. Building and buying vehicles that run on any amount of oil is just a temporary patch. What are we going to do when we run out? Energy needs to come in many forms to sustain our needs as humans - look at China and India's future needs - it's not just about us. As citizens we need to become active in a move towards alternative energy sources and their viability as consumer products for Americans and for the hope of an Eco-friendly World.

A New 'Alaskan' Lifestyle!

Oh geez, Alaska is so beautiful! We've seen lots of bears, moose, salmon, squirrels and etc. Here are some bears we saw at the Russian River Falls last week while swimming.
